Trauma Aware Higher Education Leaders Network

TAHELN is a national network of academics, educators, and higher education leaders across Australian universities united by a commitment to trauma-aware education.
The network supports educators, institutions, and researchers to embed trauma-informed thinking, leadership, and practice in higher education settings.
Across higher education, many students and staff have been impacted by trauma. TAHELN recognises that a meaningful institutional response goes beyond policy, it requires trauma-aware thinking and practice embedded in everyday teaching, learning, and leadership.
Why trauma-aware education matters
Trauma-aware education recognises the prevalence and impact of trauma on learning, behaviour, and wellbeing. In higher education, this means creating environments where students and staff feel safe, supported, and able to engage fully - and where educators are equipped with the knowledge and tools to respond to the realities their students bring into the classroom.
A trauma-sensitive mindset begins with understanding how trauma shapes the brain and nervous system, and extends to curriculum design, pedagogical approaches, institutional culture, and leadership. TAHELN exists to make this knowledge accessible and actionable across the higher education sector.
A national collaboration
TAHELN brings together staff from around 27 Australian universities who work in teaching, research, and leadership roles. Through shared frameworks, professional dialogue, and collaborative projects, the network is building a coordinated, evidence-informed response to trauma across the higher education system.
