New start, no regrets: Lisel’s journey to early childhood education
After finishing my course late last year, I have now started what is proving to be a dream job. I am loving every minute of it and have no regrets about my decision to move on from my previous career.
Lisel Thomas
Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education
Lisel Thomas’ pathway from urban planning to early childhood education began with a retirement – and has ended in her finding a fulfilling new role working with children of heightened risk. She spoke to us about how Victoria University (VU) meant that she was supported into diving into something totally new, and her fresh start made easy.
“I completed the Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education last year – and my year of study was a wild ride.”
From urban planning to early childhood
“I have had over three decades experience working as an urban planner for both State Government and Local Councils.
“In late 2022 I accepted an early retirement package from the Victorian Department of Education where I had been central to school planning, and was fortunate to receive a scholarship under the Early Childhood Scholarships and Incentives Program that helped cover the cost of my tuition at VU.”
A course that did more than scratch the surface
“I appreciated being able to dig deep into educational theories and develop a new image of children and how they learn, and loved being able to fully immerse myself in one subject at a time [with the VU Block Model®].
“Studying with international students and people of different ages and backgrounds helped build my appreciation of different cultures and perspectives. I deliberately chose to study in person as I really enjoy in-person discussion of what I am learning with my fellow students.
“I also developed a new respect for materials and place as the ‘third teacher’, and learnt a great deal about myself.“
Stepping into a dream role
“After finishing my course late last year, I have now started what is proving to be a dream job: as an educator with the Cooke Court Specialist Early Education and Development program at the Uniting Vic.Tas Early Learning Centre.
“I am thrilled to be working within a program specifically designed to support children at heightened risk, or who are experiencing social disadvantage and significant family stress.
“Early childhood experiences are critical for children’s development and can have life‑long impacts on learning, health and behaviour.
“It’s a privilege to be part of a program that will give these children the best start to their education and help ensure they start school with confidence and developmentally equal with their peers.”
A new future as educator and activist
“Early childhood educators have a privileged and honourable position that must be taken seriously. My goal is to be an activist and advocate for early childhood education.
“I am committed to child-led play-based inclusive practise, where all learners achieve their maximum potential in an environment of connection and belonging.
“I have never in my life worked so hard as I am in this role, but I am loving every minute of it and have no regrets about my decision to move on from my previous career.”
