Overview

The aim of this unit of study is to introduce students to key discipline areas within the field of psychology and the scientific basis of psychology. Students will acquire foundational psychological literacy in areas related to abnormal psychology, personality, and intelligence. Classes involve activities and discussion of research papers that foster understanding of theoretical content by focussing on specific topics and applications of research and knowledge in psychology.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Analyse current issues in psychology and how theories within the topic areas covered have evolved over time;
  2. Review and discuss core concepts and models in psychology and consider their relevance in everyday life;
  3. Evaluate and synthesise research literature relating to the topic areas covered; and
  4. Exhibit knowledge of research methods and introductory statistics in the analysis and interpretation of findings.
