Overview

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required to establish, lead and participate in a groups using a collaborative, strengths-based approach. This unit applies to any individual involved in planning and leading group activities.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand Standards and industry codes of practice.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • planned and conducted at least 3 different group activities for groups with diverse participant profiles, and;
  • facilitated at least 3 different group sessions, each with a minimum group size of 5 people, using the following communication and interpersonal skills: listening; questioning; effective non-verbal communication; empathetic responding; paraphrasing; summarising; negotiation; techniques for maintaining group cohesion; conflict resolution.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
