Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to assess capacity to support people with co-existing mental health and alcohol and other drugs issues and to work collaboratively to provide support and facilitate links to other services. This unit applies to work with people with co-existing mental health and alcohol and other drugs (AOD) assessments in a range of community services work contexts.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • worked collaboratively to provide services to at least 3 people with co-existing mental illness and AOD issues.

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:

  • values, philosophies and service delivery models of the AOD and mental health sectors, their similarities and differences;
  • legal and ethical considerations (international, national, state/territory and local) for dealing with people with co-existing issues, and how these are applied in organisations and individual practice;
  • safety and risk management considerations and strategies;
  • substances and AOD work;
  • interactions and risk factors between common types of mental health medications and other substances;
  • evidence-based mental health practice including National practice standards for the mental health workforce;
  • role and use of standard screening tools to identify co-existing mental health/AOD issues;
  • available services and support strategies appropriate to those with co-existing issues, including those beyond AOD and mental health;
  • techniques and processes for developing, documenting and implementing a plan of action to address co-existing issues, and;
  • models of change and basic principles of motivational interviewing.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
