Overview

This unit provides Pre-service Teachers (PSTs) with a comprehensive knowledge of assessment; data collection, data analysis and reporting, including feedback/feed-forward in the primary school setting. In turn, PST’s will demonstrate their understanding of assessment strategies, including informal and formal, diagnostic, formative and summative approaches to assess student learning. They will also explore professional reflections of student outcomes as a form of feedback on their teaching. In addition, PST’s will develop their skills in assessment moderation, making consistent and comparable judgements, interpret student data and report on student achievement. The unit content will provide PST’s with the skills and capacities to participate as competent and reflective members of the teaching profession and comply with legislative, administrative and organisational requirements.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Evaluate evidence-based assessments that are used to assess and monitor students’ learning needs, progress and attainment in Foundation Year to Year 6;
  2. Analyse student achievement against rubrics and standards and construct high quality feedback;
  3. Collaborate with colleagues to facilitate moderation to enable consistent and comparable judgements of student achievement; and,
  4. Articulate student achievement and learning in reporting to parents and carers and contribute to accurate and reliable records of student achievement.
