Overview

Clinical Practice 1 aims to build on and apply clinical skills in a graduated introduction to clinical practice. This involves a case-based and practical simulation approach to learning that encourages person centred assessment and management. Students will continue to learn how to formulate inclusive assessments and management plans for clients across the lifespan and diverse populations, including people from an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background and culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Students will also learn how to collaborate with other professionals and work within an interprofessional team. This unit also accentuates the importance of safe manual handling, infection control practice, safe execution of assessment and treatments and consolidates students’ basic clinical physiotherapy skills in preparation for their upcoming clinical placements.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

Formulate and implement a safe and effective person-centred assessment and treatment for patients/clients, inclusive of clients across the lifespan and from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background and culturally diverse populations requiring physiotherapy interventions;
Implement assessment and treatment for clients in collaboration with multidisciplinary team members;
Critically reflect on their readiness to engage in clinical practice and devise strategies that would facilitate their development in clinical practice; and
Formulate communication strategies that are appropriate to both health professionals and clients across the lifespan and from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background and culturally diverse populations requiring physiotherapy interventions.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Within this unit, there will be two delivery patterns which will see students completing the first two assessments in a different order. Students are supported in the workshops and simulations to complete the assessments in a timely manner.

Case presentation (13-min in-person case presentation on a patient seen in in the Osteo student clinic session, 2 min Q&A)

Assessment type: Assignment

Critical reflection on readiness to engage in clinical practice inclusive of appropriate communication strategies and CV writing (1000 word)

Assessment type: Other

Grade: 50%

OSCE - Demonstrate assessment and treatment of a patient in a 25-minute exam (5 mins reading time) (hurdle)

It is mandatory that all students have to complete the 20 hours of simulation/interprofessional activities in this unit as they contribute to final clinical placement hours required for accreditation purposes Students who miss 8 or less hours of simulation must apply for special considerations with supporting evidence. They will be able to complete the hurdle task (OSCE) but will be required to make up the hours in Semester 2. Students who miss more than 8 hours of simulation during this unit arenot able to complete the OSCE and will be required to repeat the unit.
