Overview

Students commencing tertiary study in Melbourne need to build both academic English and practical communication to succeed on campus and in the community. This unit is an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) focused course that develops reading, writing, listening and speaking macro skills, accuracy in core grammar, while providing structured opportunities to apply these skills in authentic Melbourne contexts through excursions.
This unit aims to develop academic and practical English for university and community contexts, build cultural and social competence, strengthen English for Academic Purposes (EAP) macro skills; and apply target grammar accurately in authentic texts and speech.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Apply analytical reading strategies to locate and interpret information from academic and informational sources.
  2. Produce clear, well-structured academic writing that integrates sources and opinions with coherent organisation and academic register.
  3. Demonstrate effective listening strategies by following live or recorded informational talks and accurately identify main ideas and key details.
  4. Contribute to discussions by asking and responding to questions, expressing opinions, ideas and explaining recommendations.
  5. Use a range of language structures with sufficient accuracy and range in spoken and written tasks.
