Overview

This unit prepares students for higher education in Australia by strengthening their ability to engage critically with ideas, collaborate with peers, and communicate effectively in intercultural and academic contexts. It develops the academic communication skills needed for international students to progress confidently. Students receive structured practice in academic speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Students build fluency and confidence through spoken tasks such as interviews, presentations, and debates. They also develop active listening and discussion skills by engaging with different viewpoints in intercultural contexts. Reading activities focus on analysing texts and applying strategies such as summarising and paraphrasing to support comprehension. Short written reflections consolidate learning and demonstrate clarity, organisation, and academic integrity.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Interpret main ideas and supporting details from academic and non-academic texts, demonstrating comprehension and reflection through reading, listening and short written tasks.
  2. Apply academic vocabulary and grammar to produce clear and coherent spoken and written communication.
  3. Present ideas in structured formats such as interviews, presentations and debates, using appropriate academic register, tone and demonstrating teamwork.
  4. Analyse perspectives on topical subjects to demonstrate critical awareness and intercultural understanding.
