Overview

This design studio-based unit introduces students to key concepts in physical and social sustainability, including environmental perception, environmental psychology, and environmental behaviour. It combines the exploration of sustainable design principles and project management methodologies with the integration of cutting-edge digital technologies to enhance architectural practices. The unit emphasises respect for and incorporation of culturally sensitive perspectives, including those of First Nations Peoples, while prioritising environmental sustainability. This is achieved through a circular economy approach that minimises the use of virgin materials and maximises the use of recycled inputs. Hands-on projects allow students to meld theoretical knowledge with practical skills, fostering a comprehensive understanding of architectural design processes and effective project management. This unit features Work Integrated Learning (WIL), designed to integrate academic studies with quality experience in a professional practice setting.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Develop strategies to enhance the sustainability and social value of buildings through the use of technology and ethical practices, while considering user experience and adhering to regulatory standards;
  2. Assess and improve how people move through and access spaces so that they are accessible to people with disabilities and safe for evacuations;
  3. Integrate thorough site analyses, conceptual design proposals, and detailed architectural plans with sustainable practices, respect for First Nations People’s insights, and adherence to regulatory standards to ensure socially responsible and impactful outcomes.
  4. Assess the dynamics of collaborative teamwork within a project environment and cultivate distributed leadership skills; and
  5. Present design concepts clearly to a wide audience, including clients and construction professionals, ensuring responsibility for the project’s success.
