Overview

This unit explores the intricacies of professional architectural practice, with a focus on the design development process framed by regulatory standards, practice management guidelines, research skills, and ethical considerations. It enriches students’ understanding of essential regulatory requirements through critical examination of local practice case studies, setting the stage for practical application of their design skills. This unit also equips students with a deep understanding of regulatory and ethical frameworks, sustainable design principles, digital skills, and the importance of cultural sensitivity and social responsibility, preparing them for the profession's evolving demands. By engaging with case studies and architectural analysis, students refine their ability to implement their knowledge across varied contexts, making them job-ready and capable of navigating the challenges of contemporary architectural practice with ethical insight and cultural sensitivity. Students will engage in Work Integrated Learning (WIL) activities, applying their theoretical knowledge in practical, real-world settings.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Analyse complex architectural design processes within both regulatory and practice management frameworks, integrating key principles and strategies for effective project development;
  2. Critique regulatory requirements in architecture by examining local practice case studies, utilising this analysis to understand and navigate the legal and ethical dimensions of architectural practice;
  3. Synthesise current best practices in architectural design, applying this knowledge to a specific architectural project to demonstrate competency in addressing practical and theoretical challenges; and
  4. Formulate innovative design solutions that incorporate sustainable design principles, digital proficiency, and cultural sensitivity, promoting a holistic architectural approach that prioritises environmental and social sustainability.
