Overview

This unit equips students with the design and judgement skills necessary to tackle complex problems in Mechanical Engineering Design. Students will work both individually and collaboratively to design a variety of machine elements for mechanical engineering systems. Building on the foundational knowledge from NEM2101 Mechanical Engineering Design, this unit places a strong emphasis on designing components subjected to fatigue conditions. The use of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software will facilitate the creation of solid models for mechanical elements. A real-world project will serve as the capstone for this unit, offering students a rich, authentic context to consolidate their learning and enhance their practical design skills.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Apply fundamental mechanics and scientific principles to the design and selection of mechanical elements;
  2. Identify engineering design challenges and develop effective, practical solutions;
  3. Evaluate existing mechanical designs and generate innovative alternatives using computational methods;
  4. Collaborate effectively within a design team to apply knowledge and skills across various contexts; and
  5. Communicate ideas and technical knowledge clearly and professionally to diverse audiences.
