Overview

In this design studio unit, students design low-rise sustainable buildings. Architectural Design Studio 3 builds upon the foundational skills from Architectural Design Studio 1 and the theoretical knowledge from Architectural Design Studio 2, further enhancing students’ sustainability and cultural awareness to address complex architectural projects. It covers design, planning, organisation, implementation, and evaluation, encouraging students to take full responsibility for their projects, whether individual or team-based. Emphasising architecture's role in health and quality of life, this unit encourages consideration of environmental, social, and cultural factors, while stressing sustainability, ethical practices, and regulatory compliance. Through hands-on application of assessment tools, students study various factors affecting the environmental performance of buildings, including management, water, energy, stormwater, indoor environmental quality, transport, waste, urban ecology, and innovation, within planning permit requirements. This unit incorporates Work Integrated Learning (WIL). Students will have an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge and skills in professional practice activities such as projects and preparation of design portfolios.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate and apply advanced design knowledge to formulate innovative architectural solutions that address complex problems within a sustainable and ethical framework;
  2. Critique, integrate, and utilise a comprehensive body of theoretical and practical knowledge to ensure compliance with the National Construction Code (NCC), Australian Standards and relevant building legislation;
  3. Articulate complex design ideas through various mediums to both specialist and non-specialist audiences, showcasing advanced skills in architectural representation and communication that prioritises cultural sensitivity.
  4. Integrate specific regulatory requirements, such as Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) assessments, into the design process, reflecting a holistic approach to architectural design; and
  5. Critically reflect on the social, cultural, and environmental impacts of architectural design decisions, advocating for responsible and inclusive design practices.
