Overview

Architectural Design Studio 4 is a capstone unit that equips students with the skills to apply and integrate the knowledge and capabilities acquired in previous years, fostering their transition into professional life. The unit builds upon the foundational, intermediate, and advanced skills developed in previous studios, focusing on high-rise urban projects that synthesise prior learning to tackle complex design challenges. The unit challenges students to conceptualise and detail architectural solutions for high-rise commercial buildings exceeding 25 metres in height, integrating advanced digital technologies and architectural sustainability principles. Through design-based projects, this unit encourages engagement with urban fabric complexities, ensuring projects are not only innovative but also culturally sensitive and sustainable.
The unit prepares students to lead in the transformation of urban landscapes globally, embodying excellence, sustainability, cultural sensitivity, and a strong sense of public responsibility. This unit incorporates Work Integrated Learning (WIL). Students will have an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge and skills in professional practice activities such as preparation of design portfolios.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Synthesise and apply comprehensive architectural knowledge and digital technologies, with an emphasis on sustainability, cultural sensitivity, and social impact, to develop complex architectural solutions for high-rise urban developments.
  2. Exhibit advanced design skills in developing environmentally friendly commercial and high-rise buildings from the initial concept stage through to detailed design, utilising an iterative and considered creative design process;
  3. Critically evaluate design solutions against relevant codes, standards, and sustainability principles to justify design decisions and their implications on the built environment and society;
  4. Articulate complex design ideas and management strategies effectively, integrating professional standards and ethical considerations in presentations to diverse stakeholders; and
